Without a nose that works well to allow sufficient air flow, one does not sleep optimally, and this decreases one’s daily vitality; the nightly detox of brain metabolites; and shortens cognitive lifespan.

Aside from function, noses play a major role in defining your face, your beauty, and your self-confidence. Noses are a kind of odd appendage that come in all kinds of sizes and shapes. They become longer, bigger, & thicker with age, and for women, noses change with hormones, particularly estrogen.

Keeping in mind that there is no such thing as a perfect nose, an attractive nose is an important facial feature that affects our facial appearance. Because our noses sit in the center of our faces, the nose is the feature that brings all the other facial features into a harmonious balance. If the nose is out of alignment with the other features - for example, if it’s too big, or too small, it can throw off your entire facial appearance.

About Rhinoplasty

The nose is composed of bones and cartilage. Cartilage is flexible and can be easily moved and manipulated by a skilled surgeon. There are several techniques that a skilled surgeon may use for restructuring the nose. Dr. Anton will describe with you in detail exactly what will take place during the rhinoplasty and what you can expect after the procedure. Every facial surgery is customized for each patient and takes into account many factors.

Depending on the extent of your rhinoplasty, the surgery may be performed with either general or local anesthesia. If performed under general anesthesia, you'll be sleeping during the procedure. If performed with local anesthesia, your nose will be numbed with a topical analgesic and you will be sedated to prevent any discomfort during the process.

Rhinoplasty takes approximately 2 - 3 hours under general anesthesia. Incisions are hidden in the natural creases of the nose. Changes are made at this time to the bone/bridge of the nose, the width of the nostrils, the cartilage tip of the nose and the distance between the bottom of the nose and top of the lip. Each Surgery varies and is based on each individual patient’s desires and pre-surgical nose.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure that alters the size, shape, width, inclination, prominence, or any specific feature of the nose, like the size or shape of the nostrils. An expert plastic surgeon with extensive experience in facial plastic surgery procedures can achieve a striking transformation in a patient’s face by performing a rhinoplasty procedure.

The result of your rhinoplasty surgery lasts a lifetime. Once the splint(s) are removed you will immediately begin to perceive the shape of your new nose and appreciate the changes it makes to your appearance. Almost every rhinoplasty patient reports feeling more self-confident, beautiful or handsome. A rhinoplasty can enhance the functional and aesthetic qualities of your nose while sculpting away the distractions.

Reasons for Rhinoplasty

Not everyone is born with a nose they like. For some people they can spend their entire life hating their nose and feeling insecure about how it makes them appear. On top of that, they can also have difficulty breathing or suffer from constant sinus infections.

Rhinoplasty can improve the functional and aesthetic qualities of a nose by addressing the following:

  • Breathing issues
  • Large nose
  • Bulbous tip
  • Bump
  • Hook nose
  • Wide bridge
  • Large nostrils
  • Tip position

A nose too prominent can become cumbersome when kissing. A nose too small may cause other features, like your ears and mouth, to appear larger. If your nose has an unsightly bump on its bridge, or a past injury left you with a crooked nose, this may be the first thing people notice when they look at your face.

Rhinoplasty is also performed for reasons beyond cosmetic improvements. In many cases, rhinoplasty procedures also correct respiratory conditions and restore a patient’s ability to breathe freely, improving their health as well as their quality of life.

Whether it’s due to genetic or other reasons, if your nose is somehow out of sync with the rest of your face, rhinoplasty may be the ideal solution for you. Rhinoplasty, known colloquially as a nose job, can bring your nose into proper proportion with the rest of your other facial features, improving your entire facial appearance.

Contemplating a Rhinoplasty?

It’s important to note there is not one ideal nose. Many people idealize having their favorite celebrity’s “perfect” nose, but the most important thing to keep in mind is your nose should enhance your own unique beauty. Even some doctors have a signature nose they create over and over again on every one of their patients.

Dr. Mark Anton’s rhinoplasties are tailored to aesthetically balance your unique facial features. His work is the mark of a skilled and talented sculpture who knows how to enhance your beauty with natural looking results. His philosophy is that plastic surgery should be done in a way that no one notices anything but your balanced beauty.

A rhinoplasty is performed to achieve an improvement in the shape and size of the nose. Most of our Newport Beach rhinoplasty patients desire a nose that is attractive, fits the face and appears natural. People who choose to undergo this procedure generally have one or more of the following concerns:

  • Shape or Size: Most patients who decide to undergo a Rhinoplasty are unhappy with the shape of their nose; it appears crooked, has a bump on the bridge, looks too wide or is simply too big for the face, or any other flaw that makes the person unsatisfied with its appearance.

  • Impaired Breathing: Many patients also have problems breathing due to medical conditions like a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or a prior nasal injury that has left the nasal passages blocked. Many patients feel they have a blocked airway that results in a decreased ability to breathe through their nose. A rhinoplasty procedure can dramatically improve these breathing impediments, improving a patient’s quality of life.

Rhinoplasty Types in Newport Beach

Two Types of Rhinoplasty

Two Basic Types of Nose Jobs: Closed Rhinoplasty and Open Rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty is a bit more common and is a “scarless” surgery because it does not require any incisions on the outside of the nose. This approach is mainly used for noses that have more symmetry but with a bump, bulbous tip, etc.

An open rhinoplasty requires a stairstep incision along the columella, the tissue that connects the nasal tip to the nasal base. Open rhinoplasty is required if a nose is large, if the nasal tip (underlying cartilage) is distorted or in some cases when the patient has had a previous nose job and desires a revision. With both open and closed rhinoplasties, various techniques are applied to reshape the nose to a more desirable aesthetic.

  • A large bump or hump requires an osteotomy, breaking or cutting the bone to create a straighter angle. If the bump only needs a subtle change, then rasping can be done for improvement
  • To correct a wide bridge, an ellipse of bone and cartilage (imagine the shape of a canoe) is removed, causing the bump to be completely removed and the bony side walls of the nose are released, so they can fall inward, thus narrowing the bridge and opening the eyes.
  • The tip can be refined and repositioned. To de-bulk a bulbous tip, cartilage is removed from the inside of the tip of the nose. The tip can also be raised to correct a hook nose or “witch’s” nose.
  • Breathing can be improved by cleaning out the airway. This could include straightening the septum in the event of a deviated septum and/or cauterizing and moving bulky turbinates (internal structures responsible for warming, humidifying and filtering the air we breathe).

After Surgery

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery facility using Board Certified Anesthesiologists. The procedure often takes about two hours. Now most people have this idea that a nose job hurts.

Dr. Anton’s rhinoplasty patients are pleasantly surprised to find that they experience only mild to moderate pain that is easily managed with pain medication and proper rest and recovery. This is mostly related to his techniques that minimize bruising.

Most patients wake from surgery feeling groggy, fatigued and simply wanting to sleep. Bruising and swelling around the eye and nasal areas with a small amount of bleeding and stuffiness in the nose is to be expected. A white splint will be placed across the top of the nose that will remain on for anywhere from 5 to 10 days. You may also have internal packing and stitches that will be removed in around 5 to 7 days’ time frame.

After surgery, you will go home to rest and recover. All patients will wear an external splint and some will have an internal split if internal breathing work is done. Internal splints look like straws with an opening on each end making it easy and comfortable to breathe. As with any surgery, it is important to honor the body's healing time and follow the post-operative instructions explained and given to you during your pre-operative appointment one month prior to surgery.

Internal and external splints are removed one week after surgery and this is not painful. Most swelling and bruising subsides after two weeks. Mild nasal tip swelling can continue up to a year after surgery as the tissues continue to remold and reshape into their optimal result. Post-operative dryness can be relieved with saline spray and ointment per doctor’s instructions. Patients who had their nose broken will not be allowed to wear glasses for six weeks after surgery.

For the first two weeks all patients are instructed to abstain from any activity that raises heart rate or blood pressure including:

  • exercise of any sort
  • sex
  • stress or anxiety
  • Bending, lifting or straining
  • some daily activities

Overall, most of the bruising and swelling will subside in about two weeks. Residual minimal swelling can take up to 6 months. You will be advised during your post-operative appointments about these restrictions. The healing process varies from patient to patient and is decided on an individual basis.
